MTD software in numbers: what HMRC's list of 158 products shows

HMRC lists every product recognised for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, in random order and without any totals. We read all 158 product records on 9 October 2026 and counted what each provider declares. Here is what that means if you are choosing software before your MTD start date.

40%

of the 158 products (63) can only send quarterly updates. To file your final tax return you need another product or an agent.

24

free versions can also file the final tax return, out of 37 products with a free version.

13

products (8%) already handle all 16 other kinds of income, such as a salary, interest, dividends and pensions.

61%

declare no support for blind, deaf, motor-impaired or cognitively impaired users.

What they can send to HMRC

Under MTD, the quarterly updates and the final tax return both go through software. Not every product does both.

Quarterly updates 158 (100%)
Final tax return 95 (60%)

Which business income they cover

Your qualifying income for MTD is your self-employment turnover plus your gross rents. The software must handle each source you have.

Self-employment 142 (90%)
UK property 132 (84%)
Foreign property 77 (49%)

How they keep your records

Most products keep the digital records themselves. Bridging software instead connects the spreadsheet you already use to HMRC.

Bridging (keeps your spreadsheet) 78 (49%)
Free version 37 (23%)

What this means if you are choosing software

  1. Check that it files the final tax return. 63 of the 158 products stop at the quarterly updates. That can still suit you if an accountant files your return, or if you pair it with a second product.
  2. List all your income, not just the business. A salary, savings interest, dividends or a pension must go on the same tax return. Only 13 products handle every one of these today.
  3. Free does not always mean complete. 37 products have a free version, but only 24 of those can also file the tax return. See the free options in detail.
  4. Use the filters. Our comparison of all 158 products filters on each of these features, and the 2-minute checker keeps only the products that cover your income.
